'Send a Message' Event

What is a 'Send a Message' event?

An event that sends a message to a participant based on the selected notification method and which is visible on the participant dashboard.  Once Way to Health sends out the message, the event immediately closes and is marked as complete, and no logic consequences can be built on this event type.

How do I set up a 'Send a Message' event?

  1. In under the Manage Study drop down, select 'Study Arms'. Then select 'event Schedule' for the arm where you want to add the message.

  2. Click the blue 'Add New event' button and select 'Send a Message' from the action drop down.

  3. Name the message event.

  4. Next, decide when you want to send the message.  For a welcome to study message, it is typically scheduled immediately as the participant starts in the study.  For other message types, you can choose to send a message:
    1. Same day as participant starts
    2. After participant start (day 7)
    3. After participant start by day of the week (2nd Monday)

  1. Will the message be a one time message or should it repeat?  Indicate any repeats by selecting the 'Do Not Repeat' drop down and select the frequency of repeats.

  2. Select the delivery method. Way to Health will default sending messages based on the participant's notification preference indicated in their profile. If you want to send the message via a particular notification method (i.e. email only), then select your notification method via the drop down. By selecting email only, Way to Health will override the individual participants' notification preferences and only send the message via email.

  3. Enter the desired message into the text box.
    1. The message can include any of the variables seen below the text box.
      1. Want to tell participants their baseline step count from the run-period, future goals, or other participant specific data?? You can set up Variables! This will tailor the message for each participant!

    2. (lightbulb)Tip! Can your participants receive notifications via text? If so, try to keep your message under 160 characters.  For Sprint users, ff the message is > 160 characters, it will be sent out in 2 separate texts.

  4. Click 'Add'.

  5. Your message will now display in the arm schedule with text bubble icons.

(thumbs down) Send a Message event type limitations

  1. Send a message event type are messages that can be sent only to participants, and not support partners or project staff.
    1. (plus) Want to send a message to a support partner?? The WTH workaround is to send the message via an 'Add Logic' event.  See 'Send a Conditional Message' event for more information!

  2. Send a message events can only push notifications to participants.  They do not look for participants to complete an action or look at a previous event.  This is why you will not see a 'Define Logic' button on the event in the event schedule.Â
